During the month of September HGO is celebrating the life of Rudy Avelar, the HGO's director of patron services, who passed away over the summer. For nearly 40 years Rudy was at every performance greeting patrons, making problems go away, and indulging his love of opera and its performers.

We try to meet children where they are, so that by the end of the week they will know more about music and have had fun. Today I run into adults who are married with kids who still remember how much they enjoyed Opera Camp. It’s very rewarding.

It’s great to be conducting Carousel at HGO. I love the piece; it is Rodgers and Hammerstein’s greatest score and includes one of the great anthems, “You’ll Never Walk Alone.”
